In accordance with our bylaws and our vision of a more connected urban core, we are considering sending this letter to City Council regarding connection between Hyde Park and The Grove along 45th st. Please let us know your thoughts before we send along.
"Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
The Neighborhood Association Friends of Hyde Park board supports a connection to the Grove at 45th st. Without a connection at 45th st. it will be more difficult for Hyde Park and other nearby residents to access the amenities and jobs being offered at the Grove either by car, public transportation, biking, or walking.
Safety Concerns If Street Is Removed
The nearest fire station to the Grove is located at 2109 Hancock. Removing this street connection on 45th st. would reduce the response time for fire safety and rescue to the Grove. Public safety should be a high priority and response times are critical in saving lives in emergencies.
Hyde Park Residents Want Greater Access to Jobs and Amenities
Friends of Hyde Park members voted to support new amenities like restaurants, grocery stores, and small businesses along 45th st. from Red River to Guadalupe St. Allowing greater access to the Grove from 45th st. will provide Hyde Park residents with more options in an adjoining section of 45th st. (136 Hyde Park residents voted total. Friends of Hyde Park currently has 306 voting members. For more information on our membership's vote, please click here.)
Hyde Park Residents Would Lose Public Transit Options To The Grove
CapMetro's Connection 2025 Plan calls for an extension of the 345 bus line if the Grove is approved. Without the street connection at 45th st. this extension would not be available. Hyde Park residents that are reliant on bus service would lose easier access to the amenities and jobs at the Grove.
Street Connection Or Gated Street Closed to Traffic
The best option for our community would be to keep the full street connection available for local residents to access the amenities and jobs at the Grove, for safety reasons, and to allow better public transportation for local residents that live in neighborhoods near the Grove. Otherwise, while not ideal, keeping the street connection, but blocking the street to through traffic with a gate would allow for emergency responders access to the Grove when they need immediate access without adding any additional traffic to 45th st. A gated street would also allow CapMetro to keep the bus connection that many of our residents could benefit from as well as provide for bike and pedestrian access to and from the Grove. An example gated street can be found at the intersection of Morrow St and Easy Wind Drive.
Please consider supporting this street connection that will benefit our neighborhood and its residents. A connection to the Grove at 45th st. would align with the bylaws and goals of Friends of Hyde Park "to promote a more walkable, bikeable, and transit friendly neighborhood" and "to promote policies that encourage diversity in both use and population." This statement is the opinion of the Friends of Hyde Park board, made due to its alignment to our bylaws, goals, and previous membership votes.
