Join Texas Appleseed, the Austin History Center, the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Preservation Austin to discuss Austin's past and the opportunity to help shape its future!
Maddie Sloan from Texas Appleseed will discuss how zoning and land use rules created a segregated and unequal Austin. The City will release a new zoning code draft at the end of January; we have a chance to determine whether it will make the city a more equitable place to live or reinforce the patterns of the past.
LaToya Devezin and Amanda Jasso, archivists at the Austin History Center, will provide a general overview and lead a discussion regarding the history of Austin and forced segrgation while making connections to current challenges facing communities of color in East Austin.
After the discussion, join us for a history tour of East Austin to learn more about the communities that live(d) on the east side. Harrison Eppright, with the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau, will be our tour guide!
