The following was sent to AISD about our resolution.
In a recent vote held by the neighborhood association Friends of Hyde Park, our membership voted to support and encourage AISD to select the bid for the redevelopment of the Baker Center that would allow the maximum amount of housing and/or walkable neighborhood amenities that would benefit the neighborhood. 101 out of our 372 members voted. 86% of the members that voted supported the resolution.
Our neighborhood association, Friends of Hyde Park (friendsofhydepark.com), is the largest neighborhood association in Hyde Park, has more participation of residents in our votes out of any other neighborhood association in the area, and strives to represent how the majority of the neighborhood residents feel about neighborhood issues. Development of the Baker Center would impact our neighborhood more than any other. Hyde Park residents want greater access to more walkable amenities including restaurants, grocery stores, and small businesses and to provide more needed housing in central Austin. We ask that AISD consider these needs when considering the sell or lease of the land.

“Friends of Hyde Park members support and encourage AISD to select the bid that would allow the site to be developed to allow the maximum amount of housing and/or walkable neighborhood amenities that would benefit the neighborhood. If residential use is included, options should include affordable housing units. Friends of Hyde Park encourages the preservation of the Baker Center building exterior. Regardless of selected bid, ample time should be afforded for neighborhood input.”
Please consider supporting a plan that would have walkable amenities and housing that will benefit our neighborhood and its residents.
