all great points,
Something to keep in mind is that the proposed changes a Airport/I35 crossing remove the left turn onto 45th street (replace it with a loopty-do. It seems City may be looking for ways to either calm the traffic through 45th, or turn that street into a major throuh-way --- we should be on the lookout either way.
Second, I would have the city show 45th is has more traffic than 12th street on the east side where it's a 2 lane with a bike lane from Airport to I35
Finally, do we not have a say in calming traffic on a street that is not abutting our neighborhood (e.g. North Loop / 38th, but runs through it, next to our neighborhood park etc? This is a major hazard in HP. It bisects the neighborhood, makes it difficult to enjoy Shipe, the 42nd St commercial zone, and in general is a barrier to non-motorized traffic.
Cherrywood got the city to install calming islands AND speed bumps on 38th street from Airport to I35. I am sure all that took is enough people caring enough to get the council to cave in -- just like anything else in municipal politics, make enough noise, schmooz enough politicians and your plans to make it through.
I think a 3-lane 45th street, especially with a physically separated bike lane is a MUST for 45ht street. We need to calm the traffic for that very short stint to Guadalupe, and reclaim the street for the neighborhood.
